Claire Danes, we love you – but what happened?

Shimmering gold Schiaparelli dress, beautiful. Shiny wavy hair, gorgeous. The fake tan? Not so much.

At the 2016 Emmy awards, the Homeland actress’ fair skin was an unflattering shade of orange, and viewers were quick to draw comparisons to a particular Presidential candidate on Twitter (hint: rhymes with Drumpf).

But Danes wasn’t the only one who had a beauty mishap on the red carpet.

Grease: Live actress Julianne Hough was sporting that telltale white ring around her hairline, which distracted from an otherwise flawless beauty look.

Look, we’ve all been there, and every woman who’s ever picked up a fake tan or bronzer probably has a story to tell. But our beauty blunders don’t happen on a red carpet (thank goodness).

To make sure you’re not caught looking anything less than your best, here are a few pointers for keeping your fake glow on point:

*When using bronzer, whether it’s powder, gel or cream, it’s important to blend. And blend. And blend. Buff it into the skin – don’t just sweep it on – and pay particular attention to the edges of the face, including the hairline and jaw area.

*Matte, shimmer-free bronzers look the most natural.

*Light application is key. Bronzers are there to give you a glow, not a fake tan, so use sparingly.

*For a believable fake tan, start with one coat and allow the colour to develop over a few days. Go outside. Ask your friends. Then, and only then, if you want to go darker, apply a second coat.

*If you’re using fake tan on your face, dab a tiny amount on the high points and blend outwards. And be careful around the nose and lips, and the edges of the face.
