This is why you should add sugar to your shampoo

Hair hack 101

Blame it on our use of addictive substances like dry shampoo, volume powder and hairspray, but our heads of hair can often end up needing a deeper clean than the usual wash-and-dry affords.

Enter: hair exfoliating. The third step you wouldn’t dream of skipping from your skin routine, but, we’re guessing, probably didn’t even know you should be doing to your hair.

The idea is that just like your skin needs exfoliating to slough off dead skin cells and properly remove the build-up of make-up and daily grime, so too does your hair – especially if you use a lot of product.

We’re familiar with products like the cult-fave Christophe Robin Cleansing Purifying Scrub, which contains sea salt to detox the scalp, but if you can’t stand the thought of yet another product crowding your shower shelf, try this instead: add a spoonful of sugar.

“Adding a tablespoon of sugar to a dollop of shampoo will gently exfoliate the scalp and easily dissolve and rinse out without leaving any residue on hair,” dermatologist Dr Francesca Fusco tells marie claire US.

If it has the added bonus of making your hair smell sweeter, we’re sold.

Just like regular skin exfoliating, this isn’t a step you need to include with each wash. Try incorporating a weekly scrub into your routine (say on a Sunday before you sheet mask and chill) and see if you spot the difference.
