Chris Salvatore’s life changed forever when he walked into 89-year-old Norma’s apartment four years ago.
The pair quickly became best friends, and Chris would help her cook meals, drive her to the doctor, bank, pharmacy and even recently drove her to go vote in the US presidential election.
However Chris recently took to Instagram to announce the sad news that Norma had passed away at the age of 89.
“It’s with a heavy heart that I share the news that earlier this morning the world lost a truly inspiring, beautiful woman,” he wrote. “Norma is now resting peacefully in the eternal and while she may no longer physically be with us, her spirit will continue to fill the hearts of so many people. Perhaps Norma’s lasting legacy is that her story helped the world to see the true meaning of love.
“Norma reminded me that we all are created to love and all desire to be loved. This year Norma has reminded us what Valentine’s Day is all about. To love another is not about living struggle free or never experiencing hurt or loss, but to fully and deeply open our hearts to one another without fear. Each of us is loveable even with all of our differences. Love has no boundaries. May you rest in peace my sweet sweet lady, Norma.”
She suffered from a number of health problems including leukaemia, and once Chris heard the news that she didn’t have much time left, he started a GoFundMe page to help her last a little longer. She had recently moved into Chris’ apartment so that he could look after her.
The pair had a number of great times over the years, like spending New Years together…
And even just having some low-key champagne together.
He told TODAY in an email, “She taught me to love so much deeper than I ever could imagine possible. She opened the hearts of so many people during a time when it was desperately needed. She was a truly powerful woman who had the ability to bring people together who may not have crossed paths otherwise.”
He added, “I feel her watching over me and it is a happy feeling. She is out of pain and in peace, probably drinking a glass of champagne, dancing, reunited with the many friends that she’s had throughout her life. I am forever a changed man and I thank this magnificent lady for everything she has taught me.”
