An American woman is recovering in hospital in Thailand after she fell 45 metres trying to flee a man who sexually assaulted her.

Hannah Gavios found herself lost near Krabi beach and asked a local man for directions however when she realized her was leading her into the secluded jungle she tried to flee.

“I didn’t get the best feeling about him but I was tired and wanted to get home,” she said according to Seven News.

“While we were walking he grabbed me and was holding me down and trying to take off my clothes.”

“I really thought I was going to die.”

The 23-year-old says she fought him off, punching him and biting his ear before he agreed to leave her alone. She began to run but it was dark and she unknowingly ran off a cliff.

“Before I knew it I was in mid air falling off a cliff. I was honestly thinking I wouldn’t survive,” she said.”I was screaming in pain. It was the most painful thing ever … I felt like a total vegetable. I felt completely vulnerable. I couldn’t move anything.”

Instead of calling for help, the man then continued to assault her.

“He didn’t rape me – but he did everything else. I really thought I was going to die,” she said.

That night Emergency Services received a phone call alerting them that a tourist had been injured after falling down the mountain however she wasn’t found until hours later.

“Ms Gavios is experiencing numbness on both of her legs and doctors have yet to confirm whether either of her legs are broken,” Krabi Tourist Rescue Centre Director Nitiphat Mongkolpradit told The Phuket News.

According to local police, her alleged attacker, Apai Ruengvorn, has reportedly pleaded guilty to the attack and is facing up to 10 years in jail.
