Taking Selfies Could Be Ruining Your Relationship

New research shows it negatively affect relationships.

Sure, selfies have the power to make you look better than you do in real life, and can be quite empowering for some women wanting to present themselves as beautiful even when they are told otherwise. But taking too many selfies can have a detrimental effect on your relationships, according to a recent study.

The study, published in Telematics and Informatics, explained that when people share photos of themselves online, they can cause ‘selfie-related conflicts’.

This might sound a little vague, but the research explores the reasons why social media posts can cause jealousy in relationships. The authors of the study conducted two different surveys with 305 Chilean adults over the course of two years.

While the first survey focused on jealousy, the second talked about conflicts and the quality of the romantic relationships.

The study found that the more selfies posted on social media sites, the more jealousy occurred in the couple. The also found that “photo related conflicts as a result of posting selfies negatively affected the quality of the relationship.”

They also investigated the reasons why people were posting so many selfies and found that it was to “create an idealised persona of themselves.” No surprises there.

But we think we need to look a little deeper than that in relationships. There could be issues with insecurity and lack of communication at play, so the story doesn’t end there.

Hopefully more research will show what’s going on at the heart of selfies.
