A 44-year-old woman in Western Australia’s far north has been sentenced to life in prison after fatally stabbing her ex-partner.
ABC News reports that during a drunken argument, Carolyn Jody Gore stabbed the 39-year-old man three times, one of these being in the chest.
Though she claimed that she was acting in self-defence as she feared that the man would assault her, the jury rejected this and she was found guilty of murder.
The argument initially occurred over the fact that the victim stole money from Gore, and though he provoked Gore, Justice Lindy Jenkins declared that the actions of the victim ‘were not such as to justify’ her killing him.
Gore said at her trial that she was ‘regularly physically and verbally assaulted’ by the victim when they were in a relationship, and since separating had been on friendly terms and she provided him with money, food and accommodation.
Due to Gore’s ill-health – she suffers from heart disease, high blood pressure and kidney failure from a long history of alcohol abuse – Justice Jenkins believed that she did not pose a great threat to society and delivered a shorter sentence than usual. She will serve a minimum of 12 years in jail for her crime. Her earliest release date would be 2027.
