From the bumbag to the thigh high boot, there are a few fashion items that are less trendy and a little, er, overdone — but never fear, we’re here to help. Below, we’ve rounded up the pieces that might be best retired, because nobody wants to be wearing chunky sneakers when everyone else is wearing strappy sandals, right?
Bike shorts
This trend has cycled away in our eyes and anyone still managing to pull it off should leave it for the gym, please.
Bumbags
They were everywhere in 2017, but the humble bumbag has really had its time. Opt instead for a utility waist bag or a boxy swing bag for a fresher shape.
Pageboy hats
If it’s been parodied by The Betoota Advocate, it’s time to retire it. Enter: pageboy (or better known as ‘ train driver’) hats. Leave these ones at home next festival, for the sake of fashion’s satire reputation.
Socks with sandals
They were daggy, then they were cool, now they’re back to being daggy. Tread carefully if embracing this trend, and opt for a Teva-style sandal and statement socks if you do want to pull it off. Anything else, especially if it involves heels, is a no go.
Thigh high boots
The Kim Kardashians of the world might still be touting this trend, but thigh high boots have well and truly run their course. If you do want to embrace the high boot trend, stick with knee high and leather — warm, on-trend and statement making all at once.
Ugly sneakers
Sure, they’re comfortable and ok, they’re easy, but ugly sneakers have finally reached their tipping point, edging on the side of, well, truly ugly. Embrace the comfort life with a pair of casual — read, less ugly — sneakers and opt out of the overtly chunky version we saw all over the street in 2018.
