5 Iconic ’80s Fashion Trends That Are Making A Comeback

Then & now

There was a lot of bad fashion in the ‘80s. And for those who lived in the era, you’d sooner forget many of the style choices you made. But there were also plenty of iconic ’80s fashion trends that were born out of the decade, and we continue to see their revival again and again. Especially this year. 2019 marks the return of some of the top iconic ’80s fashion trends and we are here for it. Because, like a good wine, they’ve gotten better with age.

Pairing the bold, outlandish looks of the ‘80s with modern-day minimalism, these are the ‘80s fashion trends that are about to take over your new-season style.

Trend 5: Shoulder Pads

Dramatic shoulders dominated ‘80s outfits, from gowns to blazers. The power suit style was the go-to for many models of the 80s era, and the likes of Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, Kaia Gerber and Gigi Hadid are bringing them back in a big way. While the shoulders may be broad, the modern-day version is slimmer around the waist to keep the look feminine and flattering.

Trend 4: Body Con

The aerobics era was in its prime during the ‘80s, which saw a fluoro flurry of spandex take over. Even if you weren’t on board the bodysuit-over-tights ‘80s look, you’ll be into the new iteration. Neon and spandex have joined forces again, overhauling your athleisure style in the brightest way possible.

Trend 3: Sequins

There’s always been room in our wardrobes for a little sparkle, but this season the 1980s fashion penchant for sequins is just as eye-catching as its predecessor. If you’re not ready to go head-to-toe in a sequin pants suit, work your way up with a sequin blazer over summer dresses or jeans and a tee to up the glam on your everyday look.

Trend 2: High-Waisted Jeans

The waistlines reached new heights in the ‘80s, and yet again, they’re making a major comeback. The iconic ‘80s style of high-waisted mom jeans and tucked-in tops (made famous by Tina Turner) is back, and suits all body shapes. High-waisted denim skirts that fall over the knees are also in hot demand right now.

Trend 1: Animal print

Animal prints of the ‘80s were all about roaring ‘look at me’, but the latest trend this season is less loud; instead, it beckons you to add a sophisticated flair. The print may be just as vivid, but it’s being splashed onto luxurious fabrics like silk and even mohair, making it a look you can easily don for casual occasions, as well as in the office or on a night out.
