American actress AnnaLynne McCord, who is known for her roles in 90210 (as Naomi Clark) and Nip Tuck as Eden Lord, recently revealed that she was raped as a teenager.
McCord spoke to BBC about the incident, which occurred when she was just 18 years old.
“I was sexually assaulted when I was 18 years old and I was not the typical scenario,” she said.
“I was not the one seeking any kind of solace or consolation from what happened. I pretended like it didn’t occur and I went on with my life.”
The actress perceived that it was not in a 'normal scenario' that women are told they will get raped in, like a dark alley or walking home at night. Instead, it was a friend, and it was in her own house.
“I was in my own home and I’d let a friend come stay at my place because he needed to crash.
“I woke up and my southern hospitality, if you even want to call it that, was being greatly taken advantage of.
“I woke up and he was inside me,” she said.
She said that since that moment, her life changed for the worse.
“I became very dark, suicidal, self-harming, cutting up my arms,” she said.
When she was filming 90210, the writers approached her with a potential storyline for her character in which she experience sexual assault. McCord agreed immediately, as she believed it was 'such an important topic'.
However it wasn't until months of filming of her character's experience with sexual assault until she said the memories of her own rape came flooding back and she found it unbearable.
“My whole body shut down, for 10 years I thought it was my fault, I didn’t fight back.” she said.
McCord is now trying to raise awareness of sexual assault and has been working with the Somaly Mam Foundation, which aims to end slavery and empower survivors.
