The industry starlet is the third recipient of the honour, as she follows in the footsteps of fellow Brits, Bethany Williams and Richard Quinn.

In previous years, the Queen and the Duchess of Cornwall have presented the awards (who can forget when Her Majesty took a front row seat?) with Princess Anne set to bestow the 2020 prize upon Mahtani.

Whilst studying English Literature at university, Mahtani discovered the work of Dante Alighieri and was particularly enthralled by Divine Comedy which was published in 1472.

Despite not having a scrap of formal training, she began conjuring up a jewellery collection in 2012 inspired by the work – spending each night bringing her daydreams to life.

Just like Dante’s subjects, each piece of jewellery is “battered, imperfect and a little bit melancholy” according to the brand’s website.

Mahtani wanted to create a collection which is rooted in literature and travel, one that “tells a story of whirlwind adventures, battered creatures, scraggy landscapes and passionate mistakes”.

The Instagram set soon fell head first for the up-and-coming jewellery brand with top editors, influencers and A-listers alike double-tapping every launch to grace their feed.

So it was only a matter of time until Alighieri was given the royal recognition it deserves with a commitment to sustainability shining through.

Each freshwater pearl is sourced in Singapore with every product brought to life in London’s renowned jewellery destination of Hatton Garden.

“Mahtani has managed to translate her passion for jewellery and storytelling into a highly successful business while using responsibly sourced materials,” British Fashion Council CEO, Caroline Rush, said in a statement.

“Her ethical approach and commitment to local manufacturing, combined with her ability to make beautiful, timeless, made by hand jewellery, makes her an inspiration for many young British designers. We are incredibly proud to recognise Mahtani and look forward to seeing her business grow.”
