Amy Poehler’s New Netflix Film ‘Wine Country’ Was Inspired By An IRL Trip To A Winery

Starring her IRL friends, Maya Rudolph and Tina Fey

Three of our favourite things in the entire world will soon unite, with Amy Poehler (yes!) set to make her directorial debut on Netflix (hell yes!) that features a lot of wine (please, just take all of our money now).

Poehler will direct and star in the film Wine Country, a comedy about a bunch of long-time friends who visit the Napa Valley to celebrate a 50th birthday. The film will feature an all-star cast that is basically a Saturday Night Live reunion, including Tina Fey, Maya Rudolph, Rachel Dratch, Ana Gasteyer, Paula Pell and Emily Spivey, Variety reports.

As for the plot itself, spoiler alert, Vanity Fair’s Joy Press writes, “[Poeher’s character] Abby has planned the trip down to the millisecond, but everything goes off the rails. The women get soused, rock out to retro tunes, face off against a roomful of millennials, and flex their physical-comedy skills. They also discuss the vagaries of ageing—the horror of a back that goes out at just the wrong moment, or pubic hair that resembles Colonel Sanders’s goatee.”

To announce the film—which we think already deserves all of the Oscars—Netflix released a teaser of the stars hanging out and singing  ‘Whenever I Call You Friend’.

“In many ways the film is a long conversation between funny women who don’t mind making emotional deep dives,” Poehler continues. “They discover they aren’t connecting the way they used to because they aren’t keeping their relationships. It’s a love story to all the women in my life who hold me up, and it’s told by the funniest and deepest women I know.”

Wine Country is available to stream May 10 on Netflix.
