It’s easier than you think.

RULE #1 PUT DOWN THE TOWEL

“Rubbing wet hair with a towel will distress the cuticle and cause frizz,” explains ghd ambassador Jayne Wild. “Instead, use paper towel to squeeze excess water out of the hair.”

PREP SCHOOL

“Always remove excess moisture before applying any styling aids, otherwise you will water them down and end up using a lot of unnecessary product,” warns Wild (see Rule #1). Then, apply a thermal protector, such as Charles Worthington Strength & Repair Heat Defence Spray, $15.99.

SMOOTH OPERATOR

“Give yourself a fighting chance and invest in a decent hairdryer,” suggests Wild, who likes the “fast, efficient and extremely light” ghd Air Professional Hairdryer, $199. “Keep the nozzle of the dryer pointing downwards to smooth the cuticle and reduce frizz,” advises Wild.

PHOTO FINISH

For a bouncy blow-dry: Massage a volumising foam or mousse, like Toni & Guy Prep Volume Plumping Mousse, $9.99, through damp strands. For a frizz-free blow-dry: Run a serum (try John Frieda Frizz Ease Perfect Finish Polishing Serum, $16.99) through mid-lengths and ends and go over the blow-dry with a straightener. For a wavy blow-dry: Use a smaller brush and add more bends with a curling wand or straightener.

BRUSH WITH SUCCESS

Choose your brush wisely. A natural bristle round brush smooths, volumises and defines strands. (Try Moroccanoil Boar Bristle Round Brush 25mm, $97.50.) A mixed bristle round brush involves natural and nylon bristles to minimise breakage. (Try Spornette G-36 Radial Brush $18.65.) A ceramic vented round brush “adds shine and locks in style for thick hair,” says Wild. (Try Evo Hank 52 Ceramic Radial Brush, $44.95.) And a nylon paddle brush? It helps give any hair type texture and gives a sleek finish. (We live Silver Bullet Blue Series Paddle Brush, $20.85.)
