Winter – it’s my favourite time of the year. I used to be a summer girl, a Queenslander notorious for lying in the sun for endless hours tanning. Now that I’m in my late twenties, I have found that the cooler months are my preference (and so is daily moisturiser with a hint of fake tan!) You can have so much more fun with winter clothes, and let’s be honest: Australian winter isn’t that cold – no thermals needed!

Let’s talk about the items you need in your wardrobe this season.

A blazer, with exaggerated shoulders

I love a blazer, and right now, the more eighties the better. The Wynn Hamlyn blazer I wore at fashion week really emphasises your waist. Cinching it in gives you shape, and helps highlight those ’oh-so-good’ 80’s shoulders. If it doesn’t come with a belt, belt a double-breasted jacket with your own.

Levi’s 501s

Ok, so it is not a secret that I love my denim. I always thought you could never have too many pairs, but, now that I am older, I like my wardrobe more organised and condensed. I am happy to admit every pair of denim in my wardrobe I wear and am in love with the fit! Back to the Levis 501’s skinny. Levi’s has reinvented our favourite 501 boyfriend jean with a skinny leg. Brooke is one happy lady.

A black trench coat

Trench coats are a must because you can fit layers underneath. If you’re not after a heavy coat, a comfortable trench like this House of Sunny one could be the way to go. For warmth, I layer my top and jumpers underneath, which is also a good way of playing with colours.

White pants

Winter doesn’t always have to be based around black clothes. Wear white pants like this Rebecca Vallance pair to brighten up a cooler day.

A graphic black tee

I always find I play with white and grey marle graphic tees in summer, but winter is a chance for you to play with a black version like this Rika by Ulrika Lundgren one. Wear it with your white pants, heels and a leather jacket.

A dress for layering

I like to buy pieces for events that can fit my turtlenecks or other layering items underneath. This Wynn Hamlyn mustard dress is a perfect example. It’s not tight, but can be tightened at the waist. When it cools down a little more, I would wear a Uniqlo black turtleneck underneath and even stockings, or black flared pants if need be.
