Breast cancer survivors walked the runway at New York Fashion Week

History in the making

In a fashion week show with a difference, survivors of breast cancer took to the runway to raise funds for US charity Cancerland.

Wearing lingerie label AnaOno Intimates, which was founded by breast cancer survivor Dana Donofree, women of all shapes and ages took part in the show.

Half of the women have experienced metastatic (advanced) breast cancer, according to Donofree.

“We want to show that whether you have been diagnosed with breast cancer or have a genetic marker, have breasts or have none, have visible scarring or even tattoos in place of nipples, it doesn’t matter,” Donofree told Reuters. “You are still empowered, strong and sexy.”

One of the women, 24-year-old Paige Moore, had a preventative double mastectomy just five weeks before the show.

“These scars are sexy and awesome, and I am here, I am alive and I feel good,” she told Reuters. “That is all that matters.”
