Fashion Week just got seriously weird (but fitness freaks will love it)

Is the leggings-as-pants trend back?

When you think Giambattista Valli, what comes to mind? We’re guessing the French fashion house’s impossibly frothy couture creations in sorbet shades of lemon yellow, marshmallow pink and pale violet.

So you can imagine the raised eyebrows along the front row last night, when Giambattista Valli sent Nike tights down the runway. Yep – Nike tights.

For the label’s A/W ’17-18 show, three of the 46 looks incorporated the activewear staple, teamed with lace-up stilettos, ruffled black silk blouses and heavily embellished jackets. Not exactly typical activewear.

What does it mean? Is Giambattista Valli bringing back the highly derided leggings-as-pants trend? Do they want you to work up a sweat in sequins? Should we swap our Stan Smiths for stilettos?

Not so fast. In the words of StyledBy marie claire content editor Brittany Henderson, “I love wearing sports gear all Saturday long as much as the next barre-going, latte-sipping millennial, but they’re still not pants.”

Her rule of thumb? “I can wear leggings in situations that I’m comfortable with no make-up on (brunch after the gym, the supermarket) which – thankfully – limits my options.”

We just hope Kim and Kendall are reading.
