Our hopes for the Oscars red carpet

We predict some crazy dressing

Of course we love a gorgeous gown. But some years the Oscars red carpet errs on the side of too tasteful. You know the drill: wedding-worthy neutral numbers, reliably flattering jewel tones and hour-glass silhouettes.

This year might be different.

While perfectly pretty Dior Couture is sure to make its presence felt, and the naked dress has its fans, the Gucci effect will surely be felt.

We’re in the middle of a maximalist moment: OTT embellishment, rainbow colours, pattern clashes. Oh, and did you get the memo that the ‘80s are back? Think metallic ruffles, puffed sleeves and, yes, shoulder pads. These clothes aren’t safe, but they sure are fun.

The question is, will the 89th Academy Awards offer up anything to rival its most controversial red carpet moments past?

Remember when Celine Dion wore that back-to-front white tuxedo and fedora in 1999? How about 1993 when Whoopi Goldberg dazzled in a lime green and purple satin coat-dress, casually belted over a metallic bustier and matching Capri pants? Say what you like about Bjork’s swan dress from 2001, but at least it wasn’t boring.

And where would we be without Cher? Lonesome for a midriff-bearing catsuits and showgirl headdresses, that’s where…
