The biggest fashion trends of 2016 have been revealed

The most popular bags, shoes and dresses of the year

Pssst… we’ve got the data on exactly what Australian shoppers added to cart all year – i.e. a glimpse into the wish lists and wardrobes of everyone you know or whose style you covertly admire on your way to work.

Lyst.com has gathered the stats from over a million Aussie online shoppers over the past 12 months, and it makes for fascinating reading. Especially since they can identify exactly what people searched for and pined for, as well as what they actually bought.

Here are the highlights.

Off the shoulder tops

The biggest and best-selling trend of the year: off-the-shoulder tops, particularly designs by Zara, Ellery, Tibi and Theory.

The most popular search term of the year: Zimmermann dresses.

The most searched-for bag: J.W. Anderson Pierce bag.

The most searched-for colour: “Millennial pink”, namely the sell-out Ephemera bikini and pink-mirrored sunglasses.

The bestselling sunglasses: Pared Sunglasses saw a 132 per cent increase year on year thanks to the trend for mirrored shades.

Slip dress

The most popular styles:

Slip dresses: from Reformation in particular – which is the fastest growing fashion brand in Australia this year (not bad considering there isn’t even a store here yet (we hope their CFO is reading).

Throwback logos of the likes of Gucci, Calvin Klein and Reebok increased 64 per cent year on year.

Overalls: Australians also bought up big on overalls (searches increased by 187 per cent year on year), most likely inspired by Rihanna and Bella Hadid.

Bomber jackets: outsold biker jackets by three to one in Australia, with black the most popular, followed by satin styles with embroidery. Brands ranged from Louis Vuitton to Asos.

Backless loafers: over 230% more searches this year than last, with Gucci’s Fluffy Princetown Loafer the most viewed – once every four minutes in April.

White Reebok high tops saw an 87 per cent boost in searches after Kayla Itsines started posting them to Instagram in October.

Activewear: the athleisure trend showed no signs of slowing, with We Are Handsome, The Upside and First Base seeing the biggest boosts in traffic year on year.

Floral dresses were consistently sought after, particularly by Zimmermann, Zara and Topshop. Darker florals proved more popular than light colourways.
