Lose yourself in Valentino’s olde-worlde vision

Shakespeare was the unexpected, whimsical muse for the Italian fashion house

Looking at the runway images form Valentino’s Haute Couture show yesterday, you could be forgiven for thinking that you’d travelled back in time. Several centuries back in time.

The collection was reminiscent of Elizabethan Renaissance with a heavy Shakespearean influence – think golden brocades, corset bodices, frill collars and caplets. Each look was paired with knee high riding boots, and the model’s hair was elegantly centre parted and swept back with gold wired jewellery.

In keeping with the Shakespearean sway, the show was held on the 400th anniversary of the Bard’s death, and models walked to a soundtrack specifically selected from Baz Luhrmann’s adaptation of Romeo & Juliet.

Worthy of a special mention, the collection was topped off with one divine hand painted gown that took a staggering 110 hours to complete (take a peep for yourself below).

The marie claire fashion team has compiled their favourite looks.
