Playing one of the most colourful characters in television history, Kim Cattrall has some amazing – and hilarious – memories.
But when asked about her all time favourite one, the actress recalls a special moment between Samantha and BFF Carrie.
“There’s a couple, but I think my favourite is when Carrie says ‘Don’t you want to judge me, even just a little bit?’ and Samantha says ‘Not my style’.

“But I also love when [Samantha is breaking up with boyfriend Richard] she says ‘I love you but I love me more’. That was a really special moment.”

Some 12 years since the show finished, Cattrall still holds the beloved character close to her heart, admitting that despite seeing parts of herself in all the ladies, Samantha was of course the one she related to most.
“I feel like I gave birth to her,” she says of the character, who was so unlike any female character we had seen on TV before.
“She was having sex on her terms and making decisions based on what made her feel good, whether it was a fantastic new outfit or a new sexual position, she was always up for it – or had already tried it!”
All the characters on the show opened up a newfound freedom for women, but none more so than Samantha, who, whilst being profoundly sexual, was also fiercely supportive and maternal towards the other girls.
“She was prying open this newfound sexual freedom for women, and understanding of sexuality for women that was really positive. But at the same time she was very much for the other girls, very supportive and very much a den mum at times.”
Sarah Jessica Parker recently shared a theory of hers about the show’s four main characters, suggesting that Samantha, Charlotte and Miranda were merely figments of Carrie’s imagination for her column, making up a “perfect archetype” of characters.

“That’s an interesting idea,” says Cattrall. “I think that’s really kind of fascinating actually, I never thought of it that way.”
“But I did think that all of the four characters together made up one complete person, so I can see how she would arise there. I mean I liked the different points of view, and it think it made her character so much more vulnerable, because Carrie was always questioning and always observing as the writer, whereas Samantha was always about experiencing.”
In town for Specsavers Spectacle Wearer of the Year awards, the actress, who has worn glasses since she was 10, also revealed she was actually responsible for Samantha wearing them in the show.
“One day I came in, we would film two episodes at the same time, and we would read the next two scripts in our lunch hour, and I came in with a new pair of glasses, because I needed them.”
“A week later Michael Patrick King came up to me and he said, we’re going to steal something from your life – which they had done periodically with all four of us. And he said, ‘Samantha’s going to have new glasses too, and she doesn’t like that and is a bit depressed about it – but the way she overcompensates for it is by having herself photographed nude in them’. So my stigmatism led us to that plotline!”
That story line resulted in another one of Samantha’s most infamous quotes: “Yes. I need glasses and I’m not ashamed. I have a sexy young man who loves to fuck me and I’m fabulous.”
