Angelina Jolie Slams Trump’s Immigration Ban In Powerful Opinion Piece

She wrote for The New York Times on the issue.

Angelina Jolie has responded to Trump’s immigration ban with a fiery opinion piece for The New York Times.

In the piece, she highlights the values that America claims to stand for, explains the state of the refugee crisis around the world, and why America should be responsible for letting in more refugees.

“I’m proud of our country’s history of giving shelter to the most vulnerable people,” she writes. “Americans have shed blood to defend the idea that human rights transcend culture, geography, ethnicity and religion.”

She also clears up the facts about the process of letting refugees into the country, saying that the response to the threat of terrorism should be based on ‘facts, not fear’.

She writes that the misconception that refugees are not properly screened before coming into the country is ‘simply not true’.

Refugees are in fact subject to the highest level of screening of any category of traveler to the United States. This includes months of interviews, and security checks carried out by the F.B.I., the National Counterterrorism Center, the Department of Homeland Security and the State Department.”

She adds that the people who are being put forward for resettlement are from the most vulnerable countries and situations.

She urges Trump to consider giving further thought to this harsh ban, and realising that people are most often seeking shelter.

“We must look to the sources of the terrorist threat — to the conflicts that give space and oxygen to groups like the Islamic State, and the despair and lawlessness on which they feed. We have to make common cause with people of all faiths and backgrounds fighting the same threat and seeking the same security.”
