Bella Hadid wants you to know: “I’m proud to be a Muslim”

The model speaks about her religion for the first time

Bella Hadid has opened up about religion in a telling interview with Porter magazine. The Victoria’s Secret model, who in January took to the streets with her older sister Gigi to protest against President Trump’s recent immigration bans, explains why she felt compelled to speak out.

“My dad was a refugee when he first came to America, so it’s actually very close to home for my sister and brother and me,” she said. “He was always religious, and he always prayed with us. I am proud to be a Muslim.”

Bella’s father Mohamed Hadid is a Muslim born in Nazareth (now Israel). He immigrated with is parents to America’s Washington DC when he was 14 years old and has resided in the states since.

When the sister’s marched in New York city, the pair held a sign saying, “We are all Hindus, Buddhists, Muslims, Atheists, Christians, Jews,” with letters highlighted to spell out the word “humans.”

At just 20 years old, it’s impressive to see Bella fearlessly lending her voice to a topic close to her heart.
