Professional Women Are Freezing Their Eggs Due To Shortage Of Educated Men

A new study has found

Last week, marie claire reported on the growing number of single Australian women who are choosing to become solo parents—rather than waiting for “Mr Right”.

Now, a new US study has found that some women are freezing their eggs due to a shortage of educated men.

The study, from Yale University researchers, found there was “dearth of educated men to marry”, The BBC reports.

The team talked to 150 women in the US and Israel who had chosen to freeze their eggs, and found 90% said they could not find the right partner.

“There is a major gap — they are literally missing men,” Yale professor and lead author of the study, Marcia Inhorn said, the New York Post reports. “There are not enough college graduates for them. In simple terms, this is about an oversupply of educated women.”

More than 80 percent of participants interviewed had college degrees. The study is yet to be submitted to an academic journal.

“Extensive media coverage suggests that educational and career ambitions are the main determinants of professional women’s fertility postponement, especially as they ‘lean in’ to their careers,” Inhorn told the BBC.

“Rather, they were desperately preserving their fertility beyond the natural end of their reproductive lives, because they were single without partners to marry.”
