The Secret Meaning Behind George And Amal Clooney’s Twins’ Names

So adorable!

In the most exciting news we’ve heard all week: George Clooney and wife Amal Clooney (née Alamuddin) have expanded their family by two.

The happy couple announced the arrival of their twins – a boy and a girl – overnight.

And the names?! Ella and Alexander. Too cute!

“This morning Amal and George welcomed Ella and Alexander Clooney into their lives,” the statement to PEOPLE reads.

“Ella, Alexander and Amal are all healthy, happy and doing fine. George is sedated and should recover in a few days,” they joked.

In the celebrity world, Ella and Alexander are relatively safe children’s names – especially when we’re used to the likes of Apple, North, and Blue Ivy.

According to NameBerry, Ella is the sixth most popular name in Australia. It’s an English name and a shortened form of Eleanor and Ellen. Ella can be translated to “fairy” – too cute!

The site records that celebrities such as Ben Stiller, John Travolta, and Alex Rodriguez have all chosen the name for their daughters as well.

Alexander is a Greek name which means “defending men”, or “defender of men.” It’s the 11th most popular boy’s name in the US.

Congrats to the new parents of two!
