A six-year-old Melbourne schoolgirl has won the right to wear pants to school, after originally being told that she had to wear a tunic in winter.

Year one student Asha Cariss likes to play sport but finds it difficult while wearing a heavy winter dress and stockings. However, her request to wear trousers was rejected by her school, Our Lady of the Nativity in Aberdeldie.

Asha’s mother, Simone, launched an online petition to overturn the decision.

As a result, the school’s principal Anne Doherty said there had been a miscommunication and it hadn’t been a blanket ‘no’.

The school has decided to review their uniform policy and Asha will be allowed to wear pants until a decision has been made.
