One Nation Leader Pauline Hanson has been condemned for wearing a full burqa in the Senate during question time.
The controversial politician arrived at the Senate with her face covered as part of her push to ban the burqa.
Hanson posted a statement on her Facebook page prior to Senate question time, explaining she would be “dressed modestly in a full burqa” and would be calling on the Government to ban full face coverings in public.
Attorney-General George Brandis hit back at Hanson for the stunt, saying it offended the “religious sensibilities” of Australians.
“Senator Hanson no, we will not be banning the burqa,” he said, news.com.au reports.
“Now Senator Hanson, I’m not going to pretend to ignore the stunt you have tried to pull today by arriving in the Chamber dressed in a burqa, when we all know you are not an adherent of the Islamic faith.
“And I would caution you and counsel you Senator Hanson, with respect, to be very, very careful of the offence you may do to the religious sensibilities of other Australians.”
Brandis continued: “We have about half a million Australians of the Islamic faith in this country, and the vast majority of them are law-abiding good Australians.”
Labor Senate leader Penny Wong added: “It is one thing to wear religious dress as a sincere act of faith, there is another to wear it as a stunt here in the chamber.”
