A 30-year-old mother has been charged with criminal homicide after her newborn son was killed by a cocktail of methadone, amphetamine and methylamphetamine passed through her breast milk.
According to Yahoo 7, Samantha Jones told authorities she was prescribed methadone for her addiction to painkillers.
It is alleged she also told police her son was initially breastfed but had started on formula three days before he died over concerns he was not ingesting enough milk.
The night before the baby’s death, he woke up crying. Jones, too tired to go downstairs and prepare a bottle of formula, allegedly tried breastfeeding him, NBC Chicago reports.
On April 2nd, Jones awoke to the baby “pale with bloody mucous coming out of his nose,” according to the complaint.
He was rushed to hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
She is being held on a US$3 million bail and is due to face court on July 23, Bucks Local News reported.
