The US ‘Bachelor In Paradise’ Just Made History With First Same-Sex Engagement

We're not crying, you're crying

While Australia has been busy obsessing over Matt Agnew and guessing who might take home the final rose and astrophysicist’s heart on this season of The Bachelor, the US has been watching its version of Bachelor in Paradise, which is approximately a million times better than Down Under’s – something that was proven tonight when the first-ever reality TV same-sex engagement took place.

During the show’s finale, contestant Demi Burnett proposed to her girlfriend Kristian Haggerty on a beach in Mexico. What makes the whole situation even better is that Kristian isn’t from a previous season of The Bachelor or The Bachelorette (as is usually a prerequisite of the series), rather she was flown in by producers partway through the season because Demi still had feelings for her – the two dated for months prior to filming.

After Kristian confirms she’s in love with Demi at the final commitment ceremony, she apologises for their past, before going on to say, “Like you said I came here to find myself but I found myself in you.”

The two briefly embrace before Demi says, “I love you so much and I’m so in love with you and I didn’t even know it was possible to feel this way about someone.” She then walks over to a hidden ring and gets down on one knee to ask Kristian to marry her.

Before you ask, yes, they’re still happily engaged (Australia, we could really learn a thing or two from the US in this department) and watched the finale together cuddled up on the couch and surrounded by friends. Someone pass the damn tissues.

Of course, this isn’t the first brilliant same-sex moment on The Bachelor franchise. Last year, two contestants on Bachelor Vietnam made headlines worldwide when they left the show in the middle of a rose ceremony to be with each other. When she was given a rose, frontrunner Minh Thu confessed her love for fellow contestant Truc Nhu, telling her to “come home with me” and breaking the Bachelor’s heart in the process.
