Our Very First Look At The ‘Packed To The Rafters’ Sequel Is Here—With A Twist

Its uncanny charm remains.

In another instalment to 2021’s multitude of iconic reboots (think Gossip GirlSex And The City and Pretty Little Liars), it’s officially Australia’s turn to get the treatment—beloved drama Packed To The Rafters is returning with a sequel series.

The show, now aptly called Back To The Rafters, was picked up by Amazon Prime in 2020. Despite several COVID-related delays which resulted in the TV series dropping later than expected, the next instalment for the Rafter family is signed and sealed for release next month.

Ahead of that very important day, the network dropped a sneak peek of what to expect—and a little alarmingly, it looks like our favourite couple are being torn apart.

The narrative picks up six years on from the final episode of Packed To The Rafters (which aired in 2013) and it seems like a lot has happened to the characters between then and now.

Here, everything we know about the reboot, including its trailer, cast, plot and release date.

What will Back To The Rafters be about?

The rebooted series will pick up six years after the final episode of Packed To The Rafters, with lead couple Dave and Julie Rafter now settled into their new life in the country with their youngest daughter Ruby.

However a city-based reunion of the family throws everything into question, with the trailer revealing that one half of the iconic couple wants to stay, and the other wants to go. Will the family be torn apart? That’s anyone’s guess at present.

Who is in the cast of Back To The Rafters?

Our favourite familiar faces will reprise their roles in the reboot, with Rebecca Gibney and Erik Thomson playing husband and wife Dave and Julie.

Meanwhile their son Nathan is played by Angus McLaren, who appears to be living in Sydney as a solo dad, while Ben (who will again be played by Hugh Sheridan) is married to a newcomer Cassie, played by Haiha Le.

Jessica Marais will not be reprising her role as Rachel in the series, with Georgina Haig set to take on the character in the reboot. See a glimpse of all the key characters in the trailer below.
