Greta Gerwig Plans To Inject A Feminist Spin Into The Live-Action 'Barbie' Film

Greta Gerwig Plans To Inject A Feminist Spin Into The Live-Action 'Barbie' Film

When it was announced Barbie would be made into a new live-action film, there were (unsurprisingly) some reservations. When Margot Robbie was cast as the iconic role, many couldn't help but ask how this adaptation would fit into Hollywood's modern landscape. The answer: Greta Gerwig.

The mastermind behind Ladybird has confirmed she'll be joining forces with her long-term partner Noah Baumbach to co-write the script, with the screenwriter in talks to direct the film too. If there's one thing Gerwig can guarantee, it's a strong female lead.

“For us, the Barbie movie should definitely have a message of female empowerment, and that you can dream and be anything you want,” she said.

Interestingly, Amy Schumer was originally signed up to play the role of Barbie but was forced to pull out due to conflicting schedules. At the time, she said of her decision: “The film has so much promise, and Sony and Mattel have been great partners. I’m bummed, but look forward to seeing Barbie on the big screen.” A couple of years later, Margot was confirmed to take her place.

Slated for release in 2020, the film will mark the first time the toy has been brought to the big screen outside the realm of animation. While there is no title and director as of yet, Mattel, the company that makes Barbie, said the new movie would be just the start of series of films portraying its toys.

“Playing with Barbie promotes confidence, curiosity and communication throughout a child’s journey to self-discovery,” Robbie said in a statement.

“Over the brand’s almost 60 years, Barbie has empowered kids to imagine themselves in aspirational roles from a princess to president,” the actress continued.

Now, any guesses on who could play Ken?
