From tracking basal body temperature to quitting the booze – there are so many things to consider when you’re trying to fall pregnant. Now new research has determined another factor that could influence conception.

The study – published in the scientific journal Chronobiology International – suggests that having sex before 7:30am on spring mornings will boost your chances of getting up the duff.

Swiss scientists studied sperm samples from 7,068 men aged between 25 and 40, who were undergoing fertility treatment, and found that quality was highest in semen collected in the early morning. Samples collected in the Northern Hemisphere’s spring months were also more potent, with significant decreases in concentration noticed over summer.

“Male semen quality varies with both circadian and circannual rhythms,” Lead author Dr Brigitte Leeners said. “Collection of semen in the early morning, where semen quality was highest, can be used to improve natural fertility as well as fertility resulting from assisted reproduction.”

Despite most of the focus being on women when it comes to fertility issues, experts say that male fertility is the sole cause in 20 percent of couples, and contributes to infertility in another 30 to 40 percent of cases.
