On April 14 last year, Beyonce burst onto the Coachella stage in a cropped yellow hoodie and iridescent fringed boots – and the festival would never be the same again. Dubbed Beychella, her groundbreaking performance merged cutting-edge choreography and costumes with important cultural references; the set paid tribute to historically African American colleges.
Now we can revel in it all once more via upcoming documentary Homecoming: A Film By Beyonce. The special is set to lift the lid on the lead-up to to the show, plus offer a rare and intimate glimpse at her children Blue Ivy, Rumi and Sir.
The trailer features a voiceover by writer and civil rights activist Maya Angelou, whose quotes epitomise Beyonce’s position as the first black woman to headline Coachella. “What I really want to do is be a representative of my race, of the human race,” says Angelou. “I have a chance to show how kind we can be, how intelligent and generous we can be … I know that when I finish doing what I’m sent here to do, I will be called home. And I will go home without any fear, trepidations, wondering what’s gonna happen.”
