Beyoncé Opens Up About The Lessons Her Miscarriages Taught Her

"Being ‘number one’ was no longer my priority”

During a new interview with ELLE for the magazine’s January 2020 issue, Beyoncé talked about what having miscarriages taught her about being a mother.

Back in 2013, Beyoncé revealed in her documentary Life Is But A Dream that she went through a heartbreaking miscarriage. Speaking to Oprah about why she decided to share details about it with the world, Beyoncé said, “I felt like there are so many couples that go through that, and it was a big part of my story. It was one of the hardest things I’ve been through.”

In this latest interview, she revealed how the painful experience has helped her grow and how it changed her perspective of success.

When asked if she was disappointed that her albums Lemonade and Homecoming didn’t receive more awards, Beyoncé said, “I began to search for deeper meaning when life began to teach me lessons I didn’t know I needed. Success looks different to me now. I learned that all pain and loss is in fact a gift.”

Her miscarriage led her to put herself first.

“Having miscarriages taught me that I had to mother myself before I could be a mother to someone else.”

“After having a difficult pregnancy, I took a year to focus on my health,” she revealed.

Beyoncé said that after she had Blue, “the quest for my purpose became so much deeper”.

“I died and was reborn in my relationship, and the quest for self became even stronger. Being ‘number one’ was no longer my priority. My true win is creating art and a legacy that will live far beyond me. That’s fulfilling.”
