While the spotlight might have been on the fact that Beyonce walked the red carpet at yesterday’s MTV VMA Awards with her adorable daughter Blue Ivy, there were actually a number of other women who joined the superstar and for a very important reason.

Beyonce was joined by the mothers of victims of police violence including Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Oscar Grant, and Trayvon Martin.

Most of the women also appeared in Beyonce’s ‘Lemonade’ visual album.

The women started the ‘Black Lives Matter’ movement after Trayvon Martin’s death by police in 2012 and are known as the “Mothers of the Movement”.

Beyonce went on to win 11 awards during the show including Video of the Year for her hit son ‘Formation’, which she dedicated it to the people of New Orleans where most of the video was filmed.

“I dedicate this award to the people of New Orleans. God bless you guys.”
