One Of The Monterey Five Was Suppose To Die According To ‘Big Little Lies’ Cast Member

“It’s not the script I got!”

Nicole Kidman (Celeste Write) and Meryl Streep (Mary Louise) finally had the showdown of the century in the season two finale of HBO’s Big Little LiesBut actress Poorna Jagannathan who plays he lawyer originally hired to represent Celeste says things didn’t play out quite like the show’s creators – Liane Moriaty – had initially planned.

Speaking to Vanity Fair’s Still Watching podcast, Jagannathan revealed that the show’s cliffhanger ending means the possibility of a third season is a very real one. “I read the script and I watched yesterday’s episode and I was like, ‘Oh my god there might be a season three!’” she said. What’s more? The Night Of star says the original ending would have meant a final farewell for one of the Monteray Five; Celeste Wright (Nicole Kidman); (Meryl Streep as Mary Louise); Renata Klein (Laura Dern); Bonnie Carlson (Zoë Kravitz);  and Jane Chapman (Shailene Woodley).

“It’s not the script I got! One character doesn’t even make it. One character dies. It’s a different script. This version left the door open on something I thought was definitely closed.”

Jagannathan stayed tight-lipped about which character was “saved” in the final edit however there’s some strong evidence to suggest Bonnie’s character arc was leading to her emotionally and physically drowning in her grief. Afterall her mother Elizabeth spent much of this season telling Bonnie that she’s been having visions where “somebody’s drowning.”

There’s then the suggestion that this “somebody” might be Bonnie, as she continues with, “I see you drowning right now, in a way.”

Further supporting the fan theory that Bonnie’s character was supposed to be killed off: in episode three, Bonnie has a flashback which shows her younger self scared to put her head underwater in a pool. Then Elizabeth responds by brutally shoving her child’s head underwater. These shots are then mirrored against present-day Bonnie walking into the ocean fully-clothed and being submerged by the waves.

However, we’re stoked Zoe will be back and it sounds like Nicole Kidman is very keen for another instalment of BBL. “I think we would love to do a season three because there is certainly ideas,” she told the Daily Telegraph. “But we would not do it without all of the same people involved…even the kids.”

Sounds like co-executive producer Nicole channelled her onscreen alter ego Celeste to negotiate a return for the entire cast, leading to the change-up in the script.
