The New Trailer For ‘Cinderella’ Is Here And Billy Porter As the Fairy Godmother Is Everything

And yes, his costumes are just as fabulous as we hoped

It’s safe to say that most us could only dream of having Billy Porter as our fairy godmother, but thankfully, we need to dream no longer.

A live-action Cinderella reboot from Sony is currently on the way and there is a plethora of star-studded celebrities leading the cast.

Sony’s Cinderella will be directed by Kay Cannon (Pitch Perfect writer) and is based on an idea from James Corden. Corden and his Fulwell 73 production company partner, Leo Pearlman, will be producing the live-action film.

Here’s everything we know about the latest re-imagining of the classic fairytale.

Billy Porter Is Set To Star As The Fairy Godmother

The Emmy-winning Pose actor announced his new role during the New Yorker Festival, and we can’t wait to see him turn the traditional fairy tale on its head.

Porter told CBS News in March 2020, that he would be playing his role as genderless.

“It hit me when I was on the set last week, how profound it is that I am playing the Fairy Godmother—they call it the Fab G,” Porter recalled. “Magic has no gender.” He went on to say that playing the part without gender was “powerful.” Porter continued, “This is a classic, this is a classic fairy tale for a new generation. I think that the new generation is really ready. The kids are ready. It’s the grownups that are slowing stuff down.”

Billy made history last month as the first openly gay black man to win an Emmy in the Lead Actor category. He’s also a seasoned musical actor, having performed on Broadway for decades and landing himself a Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his role as Lola in Kinky Boots in 2013.

Who Else Is Starring In The Cinderella Remake?

Despite her surely busy schedule, this film will be Camila Cabello’s debut acting role. Confirmed by The Hollywood ReporterCamila Cabello’s role as Cinderella not only includes her playing the lead role, but she will “be integrally involved” in the film’s music. As Sony is responsible for this live-action remake, the classic songs from the fairy tale will likely not be included as they are owned by Disney.

Rumour has it that the live action remake is set to not only take on a “feminist twist”, but it will also feature a cover of Beyoncé Knowles’ “Single Ladies”, that will be performed by Missy Elliott and Cabello.

According to DeadlineBritish actor Nicholas Galitzine is set to play Prince Robert opposite Cabello’s Cinderella. The report stated that after a lengthy search, Galitzine “wowed the filmmakers in many chemistry readings.” He previously appeared in the Netflix series Chambers and will play a role in the upcoming reboot of The Craft.

Reportedly set to play the evil stepmother, Deadline reported that Idina Menzel would assume the role. Menzel is a Tony- and Grammy-winning actress and a Broadway mainstay from shows including Rent and Wicked. She also voiced Elsa, the princess behind Frozen‘s “Let It Go.”

And when it comes to the rest of the supporting cast, the line up is star-studded. As per Deadline, Pierce Brosnan is playing the King, Minnie Driver is playing the Queen, Missy Elliott is playing the Town Crier, and the mice include the likes of John Mulaney, Romesh Ranganathan, and James Corden—who’s also producing.

Additional details around the modern-day storyline are scarce, with the film’s original release date of February 2021 postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic pausing production, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

But given the team working behind the scenes, we’re predicting the film may be a lighthearted comedy meets musical. Either way, we can’t wait.

Is There A Trailer For The Cinderella Remake?

Camila Cabello herself shared the first official trailer for Cinderella on her Twitter. In the 30-second clip, Cabello’s Cinderella is portrayed as a seamstress, who creates dresses for her namesake brand, gains sage advice from Porter’s Fairy Godmother and sings a variety of songs (some of which are new to the film).

Fans also get to see a montage of scenes show her evil stepmother (played by Idina Menzel) basking in the sun and party attendees dancing at a magnificent ball.
