Cover Your Eyes, ‘Bird Box’ Is Getting A Sequel

And it's closer than you think

Post-apocalyptic horror film Bird Box arrived on Netflix at the end of 2018 and immediately became one of the most talked about films of the year.

Starring Sandra Bullock, the Netflix film based on Josh Malerman’s 2014 novel of the same name, follows Malorie, a woman who is struggling to survive with her two children, she called ‘boy and girl’, after most of the world’s population is killed by an unknown force that causes people to take their own lives when they see it. Throughout the duration of the film, Malorie carries around ‘the bird box’ which helps her detect the monster’s presence. Eventually, she finds the bird box world.

The success of the Netflix adaptation has made Malerman want to write a follow up to his original novel telling more of Malorie’s story. The novel, which takes place eight years after the original story’s end, will be titled Malorie, and it’s due for release on October 1.

Speaking to Esquire, Malerman revealed that, like many viewers, after watching the movie he was left with many questions he needed answers to. “At the end of the movie, I turned to my girl Allison and said, ‘I want to know what happens next!’ and she’s like, ‘Well, you know, you could make that happen’, so it really was this warm feeling,” he said.

Malerman said the location of the sequel is “similar” to where the characters were left at the end of the first novel. “They’ve left there,” he said. “[It’s] similar in that they’re trying to make things work. It’s not like it opens with them in paradise.”

Malerman wouldn’t give away if the new novel with explain where the monsters came from, he did say he will help us “get to know both Malorie and the creatures better.”

“In the time between Bird Box coming out and the time since I’ve been writing Malorie, I’ve been asked a ton of times: people want to know what happened with Boy and Girl,” he said. “But as much as I care about Boy and Girl, this isn’t their story. The Bird Box world is Malorie’s story and I wanted to know more about her. I wanted to get to know her even better.”

It’s unknown if Netflix will pick up the Bird Box sequel.
