Some bridal trends come and go, and some come along and make you go WHY?
While it’s nothing new that brides want to go all out on their big day, make the biggest impact and make sure their wedding is the most Instagrammable event on the calendar.
Now it seems some brides are going that extra mile when it comes to changing their look for the reception. Literally.
No longer is an outfit change enough, brides are going for a more dramatic change – by cutting off their hair mid-wedding.
“More than half my brides cut off their hair immediately after their wedding,” one hair stylist, AJ Palace, told Refinery29. “If you’re planning on cutting your hair after the wedding — why not just do it at the wedding, and make it the coolest second-look reveal?”
Well I have a few reasons.
1. What if you hate it? As someone who has chopped off her locks multiple times over the years, you almost always hate it at first. You give the hairdresser a pained smile, saying “I love it” through gritted teeth, only to head home and mourn the loss of your long luscious mane.
2. As someone who has also been a bride, the day goes by in an absolute blink, and the thought of missing a good chunk of it to go and get your hair cut just seems ridiculous.
3. The logistics – so many questions! Is there a basin that you lie back in, in your white dress to wash your hair or is it a dry cut? Or do you need to shower and wash your hair? How long will it take, and if there’s water involved then you’ve got to make sure your make-up doesn’t run or then you’ll need more time fixing that too.
My concerns aside, 26-year-old Kayla Cummings couldn’t have been happier with her chop on her big day.
“I always knew I wanted to do a second look with my hair, and know myself well enough to know that I feel best with my hair down,” Cummings told TODAY Style . “I was trying to think of how I could achieve two very different looks both styled down and thought, ‘Why not just chop it?!’”
For Kayla, it helped that her hairdresser was her sister, and they managed to pull off the look in just 15 minutes.
“We had about 15 minutes blocked off for the actual haircut, and spent the first five searching for a table linen to use as a cape!” added Palace. “We chopped off Kayla’s hair, she took off her feminine skirt to reveal a sexy fitted dress beneath, and added a berry lip.”
“Griffin was shocked! Hands-on-head, jaw-dropped stunned!” Palace continued of the groom’s reaction. “He loved the cut … He hugged me too and kept saying ‘Good job!’”
“Everyone talked about it all night.”
Look we’re not sure if this trend will take off or not, but if you’re looking for maximum impact and aren’t afraid of taking a risk, why not.
