Brock Turner Is Appealing His Sexual Assault Conviction

The former Stanford student spent just 3 months in jail

Former Stanford swimmer Brock Turner, who was convicted of sexually assaulting an unconscious woman on campus, is now appealing his conviction and requesting a new trial.

The 19-year-old was charged after two students at Stanford witnessed Turner on top of a half-naked woman outside a fraternity party.

Turner was convicted of three felonies, including assault with intent to rape an intoxicated woman and sexually penetrating an unconscious person with a foreign object, The Sydney Morning Herald reports

But the student served just three months of his six months sentence because of good behaviour, which many called too lenient. Prosecutors had called for six years in jail.

According to Buzzfeed, Turner’s laywers filed a 172-page brief filed on Friday. The documents argue the prosecutor falsely told jurors the sexual assault happened behind a dumpter instead of a “completely open setting“.

Around 60 pages of the brief also point to the victim’s state of intoxication, news.com.au reports.

During Brock’s sentencing, the victim read a heartbreaking letter to her attacker, describing the “severe impact” of the assault.

“I have become a little barnacle always needing to be at someone’s side, to have my boyfriend standing next to me, sleeping beside me, protecting me,” she said.

“It is embarrassing how feeble I feel, how timidly I move through life, always guarded, ready to defend myself, ready to be angry.”
