However, as most things you see on the internet, all wasn’t as it seemed.
According to Page Six, the singer’s sweet tears had less to do with the floral appliqué gowns and diverse casting (both of which are worth applauding, too) but more to do with Dion’s late husband, René Angélil.
Apparently the soundtrack playing during the show included one seriously sentimental song for Dion, Robert’s Flack’s The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, which was Angélil and Dion’s first dance song at their 1994 wedding.
Adding to that, Angélil passed away nearly three years ago to the date of the Valentino show, meaning he would have already been front of mind for the singer. His funeral was held on January 22, 2016, the exact date of the show, in the same venue the couple got married 22 years earlier. Cue, all the tears.
Angélil passed away of a heart attack, but was sick with throat cancer for years beforehand. Dion was open about her grief, but has thrust herself back into work following his death, even taking on a Las Vegas residency.
So no, Dion wasn’t just moved to tears by the Valentino couture, there was also this very sweet, very sad reason behind her weeping. We’re not crying, you’re crying!
