In an unprecedented turn of events, time, which was once a luxury for many of us, is now readily available in abundance. This moment of relief – of stillness – has never been more treasured, providing us with a unique opportunity to reflect on every precious second. Fittingly, there’s never been a more appropriate moment for Chanel to celebrate the 20th anniversary of one of its most iconic timepieces, the J12 watch.

Coinciding with the start of a new century in 2000, the luxury watch was first handcrafted in a Chanel atelier in Switzerland, under the guidance of then artistic director, Jacques Helleu. Thirteen years later, Arnaud Chastaingt resumed the role and, revised the iconic timepiece to reflect a fresh and modern direction for the heritage house.
Speaking to The New York Times last year, Arnaud discussed the four-year period he spent reinvigorating the watch, stating, “My job wasn’t to revolutionise, Jacques had already done that... For me, it was more about evolution. In some ways, it is easier to start from scratch than retouch a creation like this.”
To celebrate 20 years of the J12’s creativity, innovative design and cutting-edge technology, Chanel muses Claudia Schiffer, Ali MacGraw, Naomi Campbell, Lily-Ross Depp and Vanessa Paradis have gathered to reflect on their own moments over the last 20 years in the ‘Not Enough’ digital campaign.
“20 years is an unimaginable length of time for me, and it’s no time at all, I know that,” shares legendary American actress Ali MacGraw. While actress and model Lily-Rose Depp, who is only 20 years old herself, remarks, “20 years is not enough to have lived a full life. I feel like at 20, you have so much life ahead of you.”
And while Chanel’s J12 watch has already achieved so much during its first 20 years of living, we can’t wait to see where the fashion house takes the iconic timepiece next.
