Channing Tatum spoke out at a Cannes Lions Q&A session about Stanford rapist Brock Turner's lenient sentence.
Brock Turner was a young twenty-year-old student at Stanford, and was given a sentence of six months jail time, with two years parol, a couple of weeks ago for a sexual assault crime against an unconscious girl. It is expected he will only actually serve three months in jail.
Channing Tatum, who is married to Jenna Dewan Tatum and has a young daughter, Everly, spoke out at the Q and A session about how horrified he was when he heard about the sentence.
“I think it’s a horrible idea to let someone off because of what they are possibly going to be capable of doing. If you start doing that, where do you stop? Where is that line? I don’t think it’s right. I think he should have been punished, personally.”
Referring to Brock Turner's swimming background, he went on to say:
"I just couldn’t believe it. It’s like if you killed someone and got caught red-handed and just because you went to a nice school, and you were a good swimmer, you somehow get a lesser sentence. That just doesn’t make any sense.”
Now that he is a father, he has been able to see things in another dimension too. He later relayed the story of a stranger coming up to his daughter and saying "Hello, Everly".
“Jenna [his wife] and I came into this with our eyes open, we know the sacrifices … but when someone approaches my daughter, you are going to get dropped.”
