We have to admit that it took a while for us to jump on the trend but after devouring the six-part show in one fell weekend, we’re now waving our pom poms high for the hit.

What is Cheer about?

Cheer is a “grit-meets-gliz” docuseries which follows the lives of a National Championship winning cheerleading team in the quaint town of Corsicana, Texas.

Under the inspiring helm of coach Monica Aldama, the university-age group go up against against one and other to be selected to compete in nationals.

According to the synopsis, viewers join the team as they face “injuries, sacrifice, personal setbacks and triumphs”.

But it’s not just about what happens on the mat, as the only thing more impressive than their performances “are the stories of adversity and triumph behind the athletes themselves”.

For many, the art of cheer is so much more than just sport with Aldama offering the teens a safe place to be themselves.
