As one of the original supermodels, Christy Turlington Burns is one of the most recognisable faces in the industry. A regular in campaigns, front rows at at all the best parties, Turlington Burns has stuck around as one of fashion’s favourite fixtures. But one thing she hasn’t done in over 20 years? Walk the runway.
That all changed this week, with the supermodel returning to the runway to close Marc Jacobs’s autumn/winter ‘19/’20 show — and subsequently close the entire New York fashion week.
Taking to the pitch-black runway for the show, which was held in its usual Park Avenue Armory location, Turlington Burns completely stunned guests when she appeared out of the dark wearing a feathered gown and a bare face.
Taking to Instagram, Turlington explained her decision to return to the runway after hanging up her heels in 1994, saying she did it in part for her daughter, who is 15 years old.
“I turned 50 this year and have arrived at a place where “Why the F not” is the answer that comes up when I ask myself questions,” she wrote. “I have a 15 year old daughter who I desperately want to see and hear me and this is a medium that “speaks”to her,” she continued.
Turlington was a fixture on the fashion week circuit throughout the 80s and 90s, with an extra special relationship with Marc Jacobs, who she walked for in his last show for Perry Ellis — famous for the fact it got him fired. It makes perfect sense then, that the supermodel came back in 2019, as Jacobs just re-released the iconic grunge collection from that fateful last show.
And, as Turlington Burns wrote in her post, the designer has been a friend since she was just 16 years old — quite a relationship!
While there’s no word yet on if the supermodel will be making any more turns on the runway, we’re hoping that ‘yes’ attitude to extend to plenty more fashion shows.
