The 2012 murder of 29-year-old Jill Meagher still feels fresh in most Australian’s minds. Her tragic death worsened by the fact her killer should have been behind bars.
Jill was walking home from a night out in Brunswick, Melbourne, along a popular and well-lit street.
It was only when she turned down an alleyway, around 400m from the safety of her house, that Adrian Bayley attacked.
He raped and then killed the young woman, before dumping her body over 50km away.
Now, the ABC documentary, Conviction, is available on Netflix, exploring the weeks that followed Jill’s death, and how homicide detectives eventually linked Bayley to the crime, reuniting Jill’s grieving husband and family with her body.
In the equally gripping and chilling documentary, the toll Jill’s brutal murder took on everyone involved is evident – detectives, who break down on camera, say they still go home and cry and Jill’s husband Tom, who was initially investigated, speaks about the weeks following her death.
The hour-long clip also gives insight into how police linked Bayley, a convicted rapist, to the crime, eventually finding her body.
