‘Buy Aussie Now’ Is The Heart-Warming Initiative Striving To Keep Australian Businesses Alive

The message is simple – keep buying local

While we might be used to seeing the checkout lines at our local Woolworths and Coles spiralling out of control amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, our small businesses, on the other hand, are struggling more than ever before.

The growing – and unnecessary – trend of ‘panic buying’ means that your local barista, takeaway joint, corner store and greengrocer are feeling the absence of their weekly, and daily store traffic, as masses flock to supermarkets in favour of a ‘one-stop-shop’ setup.

Thankfully, a heartening Instagram initiative, named Buy Aussie Now is here to support local business during the coronavirus crisis. Dedicated to keeping the doors of Australian businesses open, the page provides helpful suggestions and recommendations of products you could buy.

The sentiment is similar to drought initiative Buy From The Bushfire and bushfire campaigns Spend With Them and Stay With Them, by connecting active consumers with businesses in need.

The page was created by Mitch Catlin, founder and director of media and marketing company Catchy Media; the idea for Buy Aussie Now born out of a need to “create a way for Australians to support each other and help businesses and their employees survive,” he tells Whimn.

“We’re in for a very torrid time as people are reviewing costs and employment and it’s up to all of us to support one another and band together,” he continued.

“I’ve been fortunate to have Nadia Bartel, Rebecca Judd and Jules Lund jump on board and share it with their followers.”

“But importantly, I’m getting messages from the brands featured who are saying, ‘thank you we’ve sold lots of product’.”
