News flash for anyone who fears the romantic comedy is dead: in the past three weeks, a new icon of the genre has emerged, and it’s already proved more popular than any other rom-com released in (almost) the last decade.

Crazy Rich Asians has been crowned the most successful Hollywood romantic comedy of the last nine years after Labor Day box office takings saw it rake in a whopping $US117-million, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

That puts it a cool seven-mill ahead of the previous frontrunner, Amy Schumer’s  flick Trainwreck, which took in $US110.2-million in 2015.

The only rom-com to have topped that record is The Proposal, starring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, which made $US164-million in 2009, Harper’s Bazaar UK reports.

The first Hollywood film with an all Asian-American cast since 1993 (The Joy Luck Club), Crazy Rich Asians is based on Kevin Kwan’s bestselling novel of the same name. Since its recent release, it’s been celebrated worldwide for championing Asian actors, not to mention a killer plot-line and laugh-out-loud script. Read our review here.
