While the fashion industry continues to adjust to the new world order amid the COVID-19 pandemic, many designers have chosen to still go ahead with couture week – but instead of the grand runway spectacles we’re used to, many opted for visual presentations that allowed viewers to tune in from the comfort (and safety) of home.
Dior hosted its Fall 2020-2021 Haute Couture show virtually this week, with Maria Grazia Chiuri releasing a film entitled Le Mythe Dior, directed especially for the house by Italian filmmaker Matteo Garrone. The film paid homage to Théâtre de la Mode, a 1945 traveling fashion exhibition that promoted Parisian couture during World War II, and featured miniature creations of its collection magically come to life.
Keeping in line with the rules of couture, each look was made entirely by hand by the Parisian house’s atelier, only 40 percent smaller than its original size.
“Surrealist images manage to make visible what is in itself invisible,” Chiuri stated in a press release. “I’m interested in mystery and magic, which are also a way of exorcising uncertainty about the future.”
Overall, thirty-seven silhouettes were shown, which celebrated the work and journeys of five indomitable, inspiring figures from the Surrealist movement: Lee Miller, Dora Maar, Dorothea Tanning, Leonora Carrington and Jacqueline Lamba.
