How to make a homemade face mask

Spoiler: There’s nothing tricky about making your own face mask. All you have to do is mix everything together! Using ingredients in their raw form is the best way to get the most out of your face mask.

DIY face mask for oily skin

Here’s something you probably didn’t know about bananas – they’re a great addition to a homemade acne mask. A banana face mask helps control oil and provides a gentle exfoliation to decongest pores, while also nourishing skin in the process. Strawberries are also a great DIY ingredient for fighting breakouts, as they contain alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) and beta hydroxy acids (BHAs).

The face mask recipe: Mash a banana and three strawberries, then add in a tablespoon of honey and mix everything together. Apply all over your face and leave for 10 minutes before rinsing off. This face mask will be quite thick so you’ll want to enjoy this one laying down.

Homemade face mask for dry skin

A honey face mask may strike you as a recipe for a sticky mess, but honey has a lot of skin-loving qualities – it’s antibacterial (great for acne-prone skin), hydrating (dry skin, get amongst it!), and anti-inflammatory and soothing (sensitive skin, we’re looking at you).

The face mask recipe: Mix a tablespoon of honey (manuka honey is ideal, but exxy – raw honey is the next best alternative) with half an avocado (also super nourishing) for a hydrating face mask. DIY glow coming right up! This moisturising face mask can be left on for up to 20 minutes.

Recipe for a brightening face mask

You know how a squeeze of lemon juice throughout hair can help lighten it? Well, lemon also lightens and brightens skin, making it a great DIY face mask for glowing skin. A rich source of vitamin C and citric acid, lemon juice can help fade pigmentation and dark spots, dissolve dead skin cells, and give skin a brighter appearance overall. Just note that it can be irritating for sensitive skin types and it should be used sparingly for all skin types. Turmeric is also a great go-to ingredient for adding a radiant glow to skin. It’s anti-inflammatory, evens out skin tone and is high in antioxidants that slow down cell damage. The only thing to be weary of is turmeric will stain skin with a slightly yellow tinge. Don’t worry, it will go away after a good exfoliation, but it’s best ot avoid leaving it on for too long (10 minutes max) and don’t apply it just before heading out! Together, turmeric and lemon juice make a pretty powerful duo for upping your skin’s glow.

If your skin starts to tingle, wash it off; next time, try adding half a cup of Greek yoghurt to dilute the mask.
