The coronavirus pandemic has changed many aspects of our everyday lives. From our workdays, drinks with friends and even our weekly salon appointments – there’s no denying our ‘normal’ activities have been completely altered by the global health crisis.
Our monthly trips to the local cinema to catch up on the latest new Hollywood releases also being one of those said changes. With the COVID-19 lockdowns came the shut down of all the places we used to go to watch movies for date night and catch-ups with friends. But, if you’re seriously missing it, you’re in luck.
The rise of drive-in cinemas is happening right across Australia, with cinemas opening to cars so that you can stay safe and still catch that film you’ve been dying to watch. Below, we’ve rounded up just some of the drive-in cinema’s open nationally.
So get in loser, we’re going to watch a movie.
Mov’In Car Drive-In Cinema
Mov’In originally started as a way to watch films from the comfort of your bed – or, a hired bed in this case. But that much-loved setup is not suitable for the COVID-19 times we’re living in, so the outdoor cinema has had to adapt. A pop-up drive-in is coming to the Entertainment Quarter, starting May 28 and running right up until August 30 – all on the EQ’s carpark rooftop.
Films will screen from Wednesday – Sunday weekly, with one movie on Wednesdays and two showings on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays. The lineup features classics like Grease and Dirty Dancing, as well as newer films like Joker, Knives Out and Jojo Rabbit.
Drive-In Movie Club
Melbourne’s Drive-In Movie Club will launch in August, giving people a way to escape the house and spend time out with friends (all while social distancing, of course). The pop-up will run for six nights and there will be capacity for 100 cars. The film program is still to be announced, but organisers promise there’ll be some family-friendly flicks on the cards.
Yatala Drive-In
If you’re in need of a desperate girls night fix, Yatala’s drive-in is just the solution. Hosting a Pitch Perfect double feature, as well as Mean Girls and Clueless on the roster you can really make a night out of it. The Queensland drive-in is only offering online ticket purchases and will be running at 50 percent capacity. Normal social distancing rules will also apply to the snack bar.
