You need to do this simple thing for your hair if you’re a dry shampoo addict

If you’re anything like us, winter is when you might skip a shampoo day in favour of ten more minutes under the doona. A quick mist of dry shampoo and one elastic and ponytail later, and no one at work is the wiser. Good times all round, right?

Well, maybe not. Relying too often on dry shampoo can actually do not-so-great things for your scalp.

Think about it: the starch in dry shampoo mops up excess oil and dirt, but then it just sits there, making your scalp a prime breeding ground for bacteria. Plus, if you already struggle with scalp conditions like dandruff, dryness or flaking, too much powder can make these conditions worse.

Plenty of trichologists and dermatologists suggest thinking about the skin on our head (ie the scalp) like the skin on our face. And just as we regularly scrub our face for a deep clean and to unclog pores, we should also be exfoliating our scalps to remove dead skin cells, product and dry shampoo buildup, and stimulate blood flow. Doing this once a month can help promote a healthy environment for healthy hair growth. Which is what we all ultimately want.
